Learn More

A Taxpayer Identification Number, commonly known as a TIN, is a unique number issued by the Inland Revenue Department of Sri Lanka to identify a person or organisation for tax administration purposes. A TIN may be required when accessing tax-related services, registering applicable tax types, submitting returns, communicating with the Inland Revenue Department and completing certain financial or business procedures. Under the current registration requirements, resident individuals aged 18 years or above are required to register with the Inland Revenue Department and obtain a TIN. However, obtaining a TIN does not automatically mean that you must pay income tax. Your actual tax liability depends on your income, applicable reliefs, exemptions and other circumstances. ACCNOVA provides professional TIN registration assistance for individuals, freelancers, sole proprietors and organisations. We help you understand the process, prepare the necessary information and reduce avoidable errors or delays in your application.

Why It Matters

Why TIN Registration Is Important in Sri Lanka

A TIN is the foundation of your tax record with the Inland Revenue Department. It allows the IRD to identify your profile and connect your applicable registrations, declarations, tax returns and payments to the correct taxpayer account. TIN registration may also become relevant when opening or maintaining certain financial arrangements, receiving investment income, registering a tax type, operating a business, dealing with imports or exports, or completing transactions that require tax identification. For the Year of Assessment 2025/2026 and subsequent rules currently published by the IRD, eligible individuals are entitled to personal relief of Rs. 1,800,000. This means that having a TIN does not by itself create a tax payment. Tax is calculated separately according to your assessable income and available reliefs. Interest paid by banks and financial institutions may generally be subject to 10% Advance Income Tax. Individuals whose assessable income does not exceed the applicable relief threshold may be eligible to submit a valid self-declaration to obtain relief from this deduction, subject to the IRD requirements. Registering correctly and maintaining accurate taxpayer information can help you avoid future complications when you need to access tax services, register additional tax types or prove your tax status.
